Active dust forecast for Iceland  (click on the heading to the left)

Now you can check if dust-events are predicted in Iceland.  The prediction is based on weather forecast models and ground information about the main dust sources and a specific model for the dust release tailored for unique conditions that exist at these sites (hyper-productive dust hotspots - see the Aeolian Environment).

The upper graph in the prediction shows optical depth while the lower graph shows expected surface concentrations - which is of interest for many - as it predicts air-quality - four days in advance.

This first operational forecast for Icelandic dust
is run by the World´s Meteorological Organization Sand/Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (WMO SDS-WAS). Developed by the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia (RHMSS) in l collaboration with the Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI) and it is based on the Dust Regional Atmospheric Model (DREAM_Iceland). Facilitated by the EU COST Action inDust and the Icelandic Aerosol and Dust Association (ICEDUST) Network. Jan. 2021.
